I know a lot of people are really upset about Tumblr’s new policy on adult content but I’ve noticed there’s been a lot of misinformation, misconceptions and, frankly, fear mongering regarding the new policy. I wanted to make this post in hopes of spreading more accurate information on what’s going on. 

This post only contains excerpts from the policy that relate to the more common misconceptions I’ve been seeing spread around, but you can read the entire article here. (I wrote a summary at the bottom if you don’t want to read through it all.)

Summary

Only sexual / pornographic depictions of genitals and female nipples are going to be removed. Artwork and erotica are fine. (Which is on par with or even a little more generous then other social medias.)

Tumblr is using a bot to flag content but they admit that process has it’s flaws. If your post was flagged and you don’t think it should be, you can challenge it.

The post is then sent to a real person who will decide whether or not it goes against the new policy. The bot is also using machine learning so as people correct its mistakes overtime it will get better at flagging the right content.

Tumblr isn’t deactivating blogs that posted adult content before the policy was announced, because they were not disobeying any of their policies at the time. However, the content will be removed.

In the future, blogs that continue to post adult content may be deactivated. If you think you were wrongly deactivated, you can appeal.

On a related note: I also know a lot of people are upset about nazi and white supremacist groups on tumblr. I anticipate (and hope) that they will handle this in the future to stay on par with other social medias who have been banning this content. However, they probably only have the resources to handle one situation at a time. In the mean time, continue to report these blog and bring them to Tumblr’s attention

Thank u good grace for posting this and explaining it to ppl cuz it’s annoying me how many ppl are misunderstanding the situation and blowing it out of proportions out of fear and frustration. Ppl… u aren’t getting deleted and ur stuff is going to be looked over. If u feel it’s not inappropriate and should not be flagged/removed, just ask the tumblr staff and explain. Y’all acting like it’s going to be a mass extermination event. Also, cleaning out and trying to accurately secure the site takes time and a lot of trial and error. Technology can be stupid, so real humans have to go over it and it takes time. They need to clean out the bad graphic explicit content and then take over the other stuff. So plz stop spreading things like “we are getting deleted” or “tumblr is gonna be deleted and trash” they’re trying their best. This happened cuz other ppl were being stupid and posting really explicit and illegal content. They had no other choice but to filter this out or else they would lose profits and other important things. Then u really won’t be able to have tumblr after that. So be glad it’s still up and running and they’re trying their best to work this out.
